I try in vain to comprehend their culture The speaker is a Dane, studying the culture of Prussia and Austria, as reflected in Denmark's neighbor to the south, Schlesweig-Holstein, as shown on the map. This is a reference to the 1863-64 resolution of a long standing cultural conflict in the region between those wanting unification with Germany and those in favor of Danish nationality. In a 4 day war with Denmark, the overwhelming military superiority of Prussia and Austria decided political matters, and a culturally Germanic Schleswig-Holstein was defined and separated from Denmark. Denmark remained neutral during World War I, with both strong economic ties to Great Britain, and strong cultural ties to Prussia. |
