Naval Blockade: the Hydrolic Press
next page

"The true principle of naval power manifests itself steadily in the course of history, and the artist in this cartoon expresses it through the figure of the hydrolic press, under which the Kaiser is being slowly crushed. Beneath the irresistible weight of its descent his sword is bending and useless; it will soon break....To Raemaekers the hydrolic press becomes a sort of compendium of naval power; and a quaint resemblance to the turrets and protruding guns of a fleet of battleships is imparted by the artist to the upper parts of the engine..." William Mitchell Ramsay, Kulture in Cartoons, 1917.
